I'm Sorry Wii, but I Don't Like You
April 02, 2008
I know, I'm going back one what I said over a year ago - but I'm convinced now that the Wii really wasn't a great purchase. It's OK, really. A mediocre system with 0.02% mediocre games and 99.98% Disney Cartoons. The clearly dazed middle aged man in GameStop said it best to his little son the other day when he said; "Gosh Timmy, look at all these littlekid games. Wouldn't you love to have one of these?". The Wii, and to a large extent the DS, is nothing more than a system to play Disney Cartoons on. Oh sure, you can trot out Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl (*yawn*, I played that on the GC ten light years ago) - or you can bring up No More Heroes or Zach and Wiki. In almost three years, there have only been enough decent games released to be counted on my fingers. That's pretty sad.
At this point I've bought most of the big releases (Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros) and been fairly disappointed. Nay, I've been disappointed. Smash Bros really was a *yawn*rific game because it really is the GC version. The Wiimote isn't even used, you can play the whole thing with a GC controller no less. Metroid Prime 3 was annoying with all it's "I want to be Shadow of the Collosus and make the entire game into boss battles". Mario Galaxy actually got some time out of me, but the lack of story really bored me. Zelda:TP is about the only "good" game that I've seen released on the Wii and even it has its problems; what with the linearity of it all. Even with all this supposed gaming goodness, my Wii and many others' is simply gathering dust.
Down the pike, Fire Emblem sounds interesting (already released, I know) and I would like to pick it up and try it - but there's just too many bad games for the Wii that I'm leary at this point. Even Mario Kart is not very interesting to me; given what they've done with Smash Bros I forsee Mario Kart also not using the Wiimote and being Mario Kart: DD with improved graphics. *woohoo*. Halo 3 demonstrated more innovation over Halo 2 than Smash Bros Wii did over Smash Bro GC. That's right, I went there.
Anyway. This is a long winded post to basically say, Nintendo - I think you fucked up bad. The GameCube was a failure with about 3 games released for it and I hoped the Wii would be different. Alas, it wasn't. It really is the GameCube Turbo and Smash Bro's Brawl has proven that. The system had a lot of potential, but it failed to live up to it and I think that I'm generally done with it now. This may shock you, but I think I may actually put my system up on eBay. Frankly, I'm 24 and don't want to play Hannah Montana Returns to Middle School. Goodnight Wii, I think I may finally be done with you.

I wrote on this in here, but it ended up being too long. See my blog for my opinion on this!

just you wait - I'll have a post on MY BLOG tonight. and i'll even make it a clicky link for your viewing pleasure.

Alright. Smash Brothers might be a multiplayer only game. I may give you that and want to return it with no luck. Alas, there is no such luck. You *can* use your Wiimote to play the game too; as much as I can use my turkey baster to cook a hot dog. The Wiimote is used for executing Jump and maybe some Attack moves by pressing buttons; certainly nothing that was intended with motion control or pointing. There might be some awesome multiplayer modes that I've never experienced too - sorry, but I don't have Nintendo players in my "anti-pedophile" network so I don't have access to them,
I know that there's a lot of developer potential. A LOT. Metroid Prime 3 could have been so much more than a linear "shoot the boss in his circle" shooter. but it wasn't. This is what makes me the most angry about the system - they could have done so much more than "Hanna Montana, point out the boob that you would like the plastic surgeon to attach to your chest".
I may have screwed up on the date calculations; but I'm sorry - anything greater than a year with a few good releases is inexcusable. Your 360 list is... sorry. Halo 3, Gears of War, Crackdown, Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, Beautiful Katamari, Army of Two, the Rainbow Sixes, Grand Theft Auto soon, the Call of Duties, Lost Odyssey, Front Line, the Gundam games... and I'm not even going to continue. There's so many worthy games that it doesn't compare to the Wii. The Wii might have five games total worth playing where everything else (PS3 included) has ten. List a Wii game that metacritic thinks is > 80 and I can list a 360 game that is equal.
To be straight; what are the real games for the Wii? Zach and Wiki, Mario Galaxy, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 3 (though it sucks Carter cock), Zelda: TP, Trauma Center, Smash Bros (though it's a multiplayer only game)... so, eight games? Are there anymore to add to the "exclusive" category that are decent?
Andy 2008/04/03
Mmm... delicious GTA IV. Definitely gonna by my second 360 game. The rest you listed, better on the PC (I need to play FPS games on the PC. Gotta have mouse/keyboard), or I'm not interested in at all (beautiful katamari is just a few new levels, same old stuff). Course my list was a list of games I own, not list of games I want or think are awesome.
So don't get me wrong, I love the 360. But I love my Wii as well. And the Wii has several games that are exclusive to it that I personally am interested in, whereas the PS3 has zero. I'm not looking forward to Metal Gear IV or Final Fantasy XIII at all. The games that are coming to the PS3 that I want are also coming to the 360. I swear, 80% of their libraries are identical.
All the systems have their own merits, and I'd love to see tons of great games for each of them. I just think you should at least wait until after E3 to make a decision on whether to sell the Wii. I can't see myself ever selling mine, but alas, like all media, video games are all about opinion. Which is why I dont give a crap what the scores on metacritic are. I decide for myself if I like something. Not to imply that you don't. You play a far greater variety of games than I do, and I'm certain you wouldn't have come to these decisions if you didn't really explore the system a lot.
Really, PC gaming is where we seem to have the most fun, and the Wii seems to be the system that is putting out the most games that just dont work on a PC.

You know. I agree to some extent (too many shitty games), but i think the Wii is worth getting even if you didn't get any games, other than Wii Sports that's bundled with it. Ok, Guitar Hero III is nice. I'm not trying to justify my purchase but I really do still play on/with it. It's all subjective anyway and perhaps I'm easy to please. Wii Sports, the controller, some of the VC Games, and internet connectivity make me happy enough to be satisfied with that purchase. Just my 2 cents.
david 2008/04/03
oh, and I agree with much of what andy posted on his blog in response to this ;)
Jordan T. Cox 2008/04/03
The 360 games I listed were just off the top of my head (or sitting on my shelf next to me). I'll list off Forza, Burnout, Dead Rising, DMC4, Dynasty Wars: Gundamn, TenchuZ, KUF: Circle of Doom and The Club for even more games that most rational gamers would at least think of purchasing. I'm also not arguing about whether its better on the PC, if its available (which... there was a version only for three or four of the many games I listed). That one's totally subjective and has been argued to death much like tabs vs. spaces.
I dunno; I just feel kind of like my $400 investment doesn't get used enough. This isn't really supposed to be an argument about "system merits", because I think that the Wii as system is awesome. It's attractive, the interface is simple and intuitive and the control possibilities are pretty damned sweet. Hell, I've mentioned before that I love the little box - but over time, there've just been few good games released. I guess, I need more than a few games to justify my purchase and feel good about it.
I had hopes for the system too, just like you guys did. They were recently smashed when I was unable to locate either No More Heroes or Zach and Wiki at a local Target. I'm sorry, if I have to go to GameStop to purchase the latest big game for a system there's something wrong. What I *could* locate, however, were eighteen different Hanna Montana games. The games have clearly defined were the system is going. The complementary products for the system are 90% little kid's games. This implies that future complementary products will be too.
I think our disagreement comes down to this; Andy - you're fine with a few good games. You don't really play that many games, you play one game until you've found every little morsel. In the last calendar year I think you've played Rock Band, Guitar Hero, more Rock Band and Brawl (in the last few weeks). I demand more variety in my gaming and have dipped my toes into so many other titles that my blog could be filled with their copious text. I demand more, you're fine with less. I think that's what it boils down to.
phantomdata 2008/04/03
I think it also boils down to a difference in game tastes. I like a meaty game, thick with copious narrative and complicated storyline. I love when there's an entire world behind what I'm playing in as opposed to simply a stage to set my character abounding. I like a more involved sort of game. Andy, you skip past all that finagling fiddly story bits and like to get straight into the game. Mario Galaxy, Brawl and Wii Sports and Guitar Hero lack the kind of narrative and story telling that I so enjoy. They are, dare I say, a bit casual in their execution. This is not me. Perhaps, it is simply, that I am not a gamer destined for the Wii and it's casual games.

Ok - I failed on my blog post last night (was at work till 7 and needed that half bottle of wine afterwards), I'll post my quick summary here and post my real blog post later.
Brawl is a Multiplayer only game, and the only interesting 'new' bit is the online play, which is fun, but in this day in age, Nintendo had to do better to impress me. Microsoft has been doing quality online play with Halo 2 and beyond, to say the least. That was Nov, 04 - and there were other online games that excelled on Live before that (Mechassault was Nov, 2002!).
Nintendo made it a real pain to actually play with friends (you both need to know eachothers random 12 digit codes? and to share levels, you ALSO need their 16 digit Mii code? WTF.) - and they still didn't make it 'good' - I mean FFS, aparently Netgear routers 'break' buddy-to-buddy play, yet all other functionality works. They didn't test one of the biggest manufacturers of home routers for compatibility?
Also, way to fail on the control scheme - rather than making the wiimote and nunchaku usable, the only 'real' way to play is to use the gamecube controllers - and they stopped manufacturing the wavebird, and have no plans to revamp the gamecube controller for Bluetooth wireless.
Ok, once you get past that, the game is a lot of good fun. Except for tripping. wtf. But, that fun was also had in great quantities on my little-used gamecube.
I'll put it out there - I don't own a Wii - i've got plenty of friends who do, and guess how much its used? not much. Brawl brought it back out of the shelf, but other than that, a much better experience is available on the X360.
I'll take a paraphrased quote from Alton Brown - unitaskers are not welcome in my house. Nintendo has made it a 'point' that their console does one thing - play games. Thats a fine stance, but not for me.
Oh, and where the heck are the RPGs for the Wii?
Andy 2008/04/03
Where are the RPGs on any console? The only RPG that's come out that I have any interest in lately is Mass Effect. I've kind of grown tired of JRPGs like Final Fantasy. The storylines have become predictable and cliche, and the men are becoming more and more feminine. The last RPG I played that I really liked was KotoR. Give us another one like that!
It really is too bad that the Wii has messed up terribly on the online aspect of games. Not only is it hard to find and play with your friends, but there's always lag. Fuck that. Course even if it worked perfectly I couldn't see it being as fun as playing in the room with everyone. Draz, James, Alex and I were playing a match the other night and I had a blast. I play Rock Band online all the time doing coop band play and though fun, doesn't compare to when the people I'm playing with are in the same room as me. As for the control scheme, James uses the Wiimote plus nunchuck and he does just as well as any of the rest of us. There's 3 ways to play the game and none are better or worse, just different. PLUS the keys are completely mappable for each setup. Not something you often see in a console game. (though its ridiculous for ANY game to not have that feature these days)
And don't get me wrong Jordan, I too love a game with great story and depth. I replayed the Half Life series several times just for the story. I've replayed Final Fantasy 7 more times than I can remember, not because the gameplay is great, but because it's like rewatching an old movie that I loved. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to GTA IV. I know it'll have an entertaining plot and tons of little details that will make it awesome.
Also, I dont consider any of this an argument or debate. Just us stating our opinions on a topic we all enjoy. :)
Andy 2008/04/03
Also, Jordan, for some reason when your comments are viewed in IE, each post is slightly smaller than the last. I was trying to look at it from work today and everything just kept getting smaller! Even the fields here at the bottom to post were tiny.
OnyxRaven 2008/04/03
Hah, well heres another post to make it smaller!
Online is fun, especially when we had Ventrillo up so we could talk to the folks we were playing with. Otherwise it was ho-hum.
mass effect is awesome. I'm playing through for the second time right now. I need to play through KOTOR again too. I've heard Lost Odyssey is amazing as well, so that'll be the next game I will pick up. I've got Blue Dragon, but have only played the demo so far - i've heard mixed things - typical jrpg for the most part.
I end up playing quite a bit of the arcade games on the 360 - rezhd is sweet, and I love me some Catan. I dunno, I just haven't found that game for the wii that said 'buy it', where there are a number for the 360 (it was halo3 and mass effect that sealed it)
phantomdata 2008/04/03
Yes, my site probably does have IE issues. Whoops. ;p
Well, there's Eternal Sonata for the 360 as well as two others that look interesting (but ebgames' site is down now). There's plenty for the DS too - from Final Fantasy III to Zelda to Lunar. I do miss the plethora of good RPGs that we had in the days of the SNES - but I yearn for good old school JRPGs. There's Zelda for the Wii and the low quality Dragon Warrior release.
Good to hear some loving of the meaty games. :) I just wish that the Wii could have some. :( I am also definitely looking forward to GTA IV too. T'will be entertaining and a nice big $60 hit to my wallet. :)
OnyxRaven; One of our (Andy and I) friends moved into his apartment about six months ago and hadn't unpacked his Wii at all until Fire Emblem came out. It was only at this point that he realized somewhere in the last six months, his Wii had gotten stolen and he didn't even notice.
OnyxRaven 2008/04/04
ouch. I they're still in high demand I guess.
phantomdata 2008/04/04
Ya, which is why I'm interested in offloading it now instead of waiting.
Draz 2008/04/05
Well, as soon as Sam and Max release for Wii, I'll be very content. Until then, I think I'll go replay Luigi's Mansion.
