I'm Disabling Automatic Updates
August 30, 2007
Well, I'm finally disabling Windows Automatic Updates on my PC. Nothing major here, it's just that MS loves to make my machine reboot in the middle of the night. Since I've been back on Tuesday I've come in and found my machine rebooted TWICE. No offense guys, but twice in one week is a bad amount of "automatic reboots".
How do you do this, you ask? Go to Control Panel - Windows Updates - Change Settings - "Download updates but let me choose them". It's not the simplest process, but it's not very complicated either. This will cause Windows to at least notify you of updates being present.

I've never turned on automatic installation - its just asking for an update to totally hose your computer. I at least want to see the vague description that microsoft gives in their update box, and I want to push the button to install them.
You wouldn't do an 'apt-get update; apt-get upgrade' in a cron, or even without first seeing what is going to be upgraded would you?

However, I've had apt-get hose systems quite a few times... meanwhile I've only ever once had a Windows 2000 update hose a Windows system. I used to carefully read through each update, but now-a-days (servers and production workstations aside) I just let it go. I realized that I've never once declined a critical update... so why was I even bothering?
