Hotlinking Images Sucks
April 26, 2007
So, myspace users really shouldn't be on the great Intertubes - that's all I have to say. You know what sucks? Bandwidth drains by some dweeb hotlinking your image on his myspace profile. You know what sucks more? When I redirect all image links to my site from myspace to lemonparty. Enjoy your lemonparty themed myspace profile!
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS, DON'T EVEN TRY FINDING OUT.
Technical Land here we come! This is how I did it;
$HTTP["referer"] =~ "myspace\.com" {
url.redirect = ( "^/.*\.(jpe?g|png|gif)" => "lemonparty.gif" )
}
and certainly the inclusion of mod_redirect in my lighttpd.conf.
Update: Fun has been had. The users are now redirected back to myspace's page, to waste their own bandwidth.

That is mean... I salute you.

Thirteen of them have gotten hit so far. I'll probably change it to some Brocollis at some point when I feel I've made my point. Jason Scott over at Textfiles.com had a similar problem except a myspacer decided to tie his image into a theme that got very popular. His much more eloquent post is up at:

You might get a kick out of textfiles.com itself. It's a collection of old-school BBS postings and textfiles from way back before you started watching Star Trek.

Us old school military types are using it to find each other. That seems to be the only useful thing it is used for. I actually found out that a guy I was stationed with in Korea works for Disney now and is into dudes. Amazing

Jesse, ah yes. It is true that there are a good amount of intelligent people with good uses, the preponderance of users just don't seem to know the first thing about etiquette. I don't mean to offend any of the smarter users of the site. I myself had a Geocities page back in the day, so I know how it goes to getting that kind of stigma attached to yourself.
It's cool that you guys are using it for a useful purpose though, kudos. I will archive your post so that if you ever go to work for Disney I can make fun of you.
Btw, my sister responded to the weighing post at http://phantomdata.ath.cx:8081/post/show/253.
