Dell Express Upgrade, Wow.

So, some of you may be aware of the recent "Dell Express Upgrade" campaign. It was designed to get consumers to purchase new Dell computers right before Vista was released, instead of waiting until after. Supposedly, once Vista was released Dell would ship the consumer a lovely little Vista Upgrade Kit. Well, here's the thing... We still don't have our upgrade kit and Vista been out for a long time.

Now, some of you may also be aware that I've talked about this before. We purchased a new machine here at work with the express desire to have at least one machine running Vista full-time (to learn its quirks and what-not) and we thought that the Express Upgrade kit was a perfect plan. Wow, were we wrong. We still don't have our kit.

Dell apparently watches the blogosphere, but really doesn't seem to care. Their campaign got dugg as a failed affair, but they still haven't gotten back on their feet to fix the problem and deliver the goods that were promised to consumers. Thanks guys.

Andy

And they haven't been sued yet?

Jesse

Wow Jordan. I guess when your receivables are as large as Dell's, you can afford to piss people off. Way to go Dell...

Jordan T. Cox

@Andy; It's in the fine print that they can take three months or more to deliver.

@Jesse; I bet that they really don't care about the market segment that they're pissing off because it's not a big segment for them. I think that their big segments are Jane and Joe Sixpack and PHB Business User. Since Big Media hasn't covered this at all, Jane and Joe aren't going to be hearing about the campaign at all. Most business users in purchasing positions are probably not too anxious to be running Vista anyway, so when it comes - it comes. That leaves bleeding edge developers and computer tinkerers like myself. We're the market that typically builds their own, makes their own and configures their own - and really don't have all that much need for a company like Dell. I think that I'm an oddity since I'm both hardcore IT AND able to make purchasing decisions.

What do you guys think?

Jesse

You have hit it right on the head. Most IT people that I sell to have to make suggestions and hope that some VP who has no clue about technology ok's their suggestion. When my sales guy calls on a company he usually tries to get past the IT guy because they don't make the final decision on purchasing.
