4Chan Actually Taken Seriously!
October 21, 2006
I was browsing /b/ today and noticed something startling. It would appear that during a recent thread about coming up with the most ridiculous bomb threats, a man posted something regarding an NFL stadium. Government officials apparently took note of this and took it quite seriously. He's now facing charges and penalties.
What makes this very interesting is that the media has labeled it a "hoax". You see, most people take the word "hoax" to include intent to deceive. Simply because words appear in some back-water chatroom does not imply intent of deception. Simply because someone believes something that you stated, does not include deception - the intent must be there.
I'm not sure about you, but if you believe something that you see on /b/... you're in for a big surprise in life. As can be seen from the caturday pictures, 4chan is not a serious place. From desu to lazer chargin', there's nothing about /b/ that would lead someone to believe it is a source of sober comments. Couple that with the fact that the particular thread in question probably included many barrel rolls into someone's pooper as a suggested method for NFL-related destruction and you have officially achieved ludicrous speed!
Believing /b/ to be full of fact and truth is like wandering into a prison, and believing all of the inmates when they say that they're innocent and dropped the soap. Or, perhaps like wandering around an insane asylum (is there some PC term for that today too? Home for those with altered perceptions of reality and/or morality?) and believing every distorted view of the world.
I suppose that the FBI should also investigate the copy pastas about how to summon ghosts and have all of your known relatives killed as a result. I also hear that the Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire was responsible for the WTC attacks. Aaaaand, did you know that George Bush likes to eat cats for breakfast?
Here's the YouTube link to the video. I originally heard about this on 4chan itself, so if it's wrong - someone let me know.
And to the comment, "It's like yelling fire in a crowded theater!"... that's not quite true. It's like yelling "Jesus Christ, it's a Lion! Everybody in the car!" in a well lit theater where everyone can plainly see that there is in fact, not a lion present.
Idiots.
Update; here's another YouTube posting. Goddamn idiots. That's all I can say; "The dep't of Homeland Security is urging Americans to go about their normal business, and go to football games" (paraphrased). I seriously don't get how it could have been construed as "scary" by anybody with an IQ above 30. Ah, well. This is yet another reason why I don't watch mainstream media.

Also chilling; this man can now be whisked away and tortured for the rest of his life. God bless America!

Hmmm, all good points. Some "sheeple" of the world will believe anything the media or anyone of stature will say. David Koresh and Jim Jones comes to mind. On the other hand, the FBI needs to investigate every threat to this country. The media needs to use more discretion on how and what they report on. And, people need to use logic as well.

Yes, fully agreed. I do understand the investigation of the threat. Sheer investigation though, is completely separate from an arrest and assault of charges. After viewing the forum and manner of the posts, it should have been immediately obvious that this was not a threat or even a hoax - but something construed (not that I find it so) as humor.
Also, as an aside - the threat became "copypasta". That is, many different people latched onto it and began posting and reposting it over and over again. Mr. Brahm did not necessarily post all of the "threats". But, the FBI need not be concerned with things like that.
